Acoustics of concert, theatre and assembly halls
A concert, theater, or auditorium hall should provide a spacious soundstage, ensuring music is heard clearly and speech is understood in the back row. This is achieved by balancing sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing surfaces and protecting the hall from external noise. IN TECH STROY works with halls in educational institutions, public buildings, and sports and entertainment complexes, including Humo Arena and the Tashkent City Planetarium.
Key figures
- The optimal reverberation time depends on the purpose and volume: for a drama theater and an assembly hall for speech events, it is approximately 1.0 s; for a concert hall for symphonic music, it is significantly longer, up to 1.8–2.2 s.
- A multi-purpose auditorium needs a compromise between speech and music.
Typical problems
- Echo and flutter between parallel walls.
- The voice from the stage is lost in the back rows.
- The room is too dull after improper finishing with foam rubber or fabric.
- Noise from the street, from the lobby and from the ventilation.
Our solutions
- Sound-reflecting panels near the stage and on the ceiling above it are Decoustic Original without perforation, Rockfon Sonar Bas.
- Sound-absorbing panels on the back wall – Decoustic, HERADESIGN, Rockfon Koral Tenor for low frequencies.
- Acoustic plaster Sonaspray for complex architectural forms.
- Soundproofing and vibration insulation walls, ceilings and engineering equipment.
How we work
- Analysis of the hall and usage scenario: music, speech, multipurpose.
- Calculation of reverberation and placement of materials.
- Selection of finishing materials in the hall design.
- Delivery and installation.

Materials for the hall
| Surface | Task | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| The ceiling above the stage | Direct the sound into the hall | Sound-reflecting panels, Rockfon Sonar Bas |
| The ceiling above the spectators | Reverb control | Acoustic slabs, islands |
| Back wall | Remove echo | Decoustic, HERADESIGN, Rockfon Koral Tenor |
| Side walls | Volume and dispersion | Alternating reflective and absorbent panels |
| Complex forms | Seamless finish | Sonaspray acoustic plaster |
Why IN TECH STROY
- Since 2008, we have been operating in the Uzbek market: supplying and installing acoustic ceilings, wall panels, and sound and vibration insulation.
- More than 60 completed projects: Tashkent and Samarkand airports, metro stations, InterContinental and Courtyard by Marriott, Humo Arena, ministries, clinics, schools and universities.
- Materials from leading brands: Rockfon, Ecophon, Knauf Ceiling Solutions (AMF, Armstrong), HERADESIGN, ROCKWOOL, Decoustic, ZIPS, Shumanet.
- Warehouse and two showrooms in Tashkent — materials can be seen in person and picked up from the warehouse.
- Our own installation teams and selection of a solution based on the task and budget.
Frequently asked questions
How to improve the acoustics of an assembly hall?
Add sound-absorbing panels to the rear wall, sound-reflecting surfaces near the stage, and an acoustic ceiling in the auditorium. The amount of materials required is calculated based on the volume of the hall and its intended use.
Why did the hall start to sound dull after finishing?
Most likely, there’s too much sound absorption, or it only works at high frequencies (fabric, foam). A balance of reflective and absorbent surfaces and materials that work at low frequencies are needed.
How do the acoustics of a concert hall differ from those of an assembly hall?
A concert hall for music requires a longer reverberation, while an assembly hall for speeches requires a shorter one. Multipurpose halls are designed as a compromise.
Is soundproofing necessary for the hall?
Yes, if there’s a noisy street, lobby, gym, or ventilation chamber nearby. Soundproofing and vibration insulation protect the gym from outside noise, and adjacent rooms from the sound of the gym.
