Basic principles of good acoustics

• Soundproofing comes first, then finishing. If noise from outside penetrates the room, no amount of interior panels will block it.
• Reverberation time depends on the intended purpose. A classroom or meeting room requires a short reverberation for speech, while a concert hall requires a longer one for music.
• Proper placement of materials. It's not just the amount of sound absorber that's important, but also its location: the ceiling, the back wall, or the areas opposite the stage.
• Equipment vibration isolation. Ventilation systems, pumps, and air conditioners are common sources of low-frequency hum.
• Fire safety and hygiene requirements – especially for schools, clinics and public buildings.

How does soundproofing differ from room acoustics?

Soundproofing prevents noise from passing between rooms and from the street. Room acoustics are how sound behaves within a room: echo, speech intelligibility, and music quality. For halls, classrooms, and movie theaters, both are important.
